How The Sandy Hook Shooting Brought Me Here

How ten-plus years of advocacy that stemmed from the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, including a few key moments brought me to this place.

My Unique Prespectives

The unique perspective I bring to this work by combining almost 30 years in the IT and business world with over 10 years of advocacy in violence prevention, public health, and, more recently, in inclusive leadership and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Colleague Testimonial

Lee has been a voice for justice and compassion since the tragedy of Sandy Hook. Seeing him shift into doing diversity, equity, and inclusion work is a natural transition and fit for someone so deeply committed to doing his own work and inspiring others to co-create a world of equity, kindness, and radical care for all. Clients and colleagues are lucky to experience his heart and skillset.

Colleague Testimonial

While I knew Lee Shull as a kind and wise friend prior to the Sandy Elementary School Shootings, it was in the days following the shooting - in what came to be  known as that night in "Natalie's Kitchen" - that I got to know the Lee Shull that can make things happen. A number of us had gathered to process and grieve the horrific tragedy. Motivated by an urge to "do something," Lee took hold of the reins by organizing a next-day meeting at our local library which was open to the broader community. One meeting evolved into several and eventually - thanks to Lee's passion and leadership - The Sandy Hook Promise was launched. Many people have an earnest desire to make a difference. Lee is one of those people, however, who knows how to combine desire with sustainable action. And unlike those whose efforts are fueled by anger or ego, Lee has an ability to address social issues not in a blaming or shaming way but rather, through honest and frank dialogue. He's also unafraid to have conversations that may be uncomfortable - a necessity in his field that he navigates beautifully. Whether you are a CEO of a company, a victim of trauma, or want to help your community, Lee's ability to truly listen, collaborate, organize, and genuinely care are qualities worth getting to know.

I met Lee in 2022 and we formed a connection almost immediately. As White men, we worked to understand how we can better contribute to a more just and inclusive society. Lee's expertise in the realm of diversity and equity, coupled with his ability to foster meaningful dialogue and understanding, makes him an ideal choice for organizations seeking guidance in this important area. His genuine care for others and his commitment to creating a more inclusive society are evident in every interaction. During our time together, I witnessed Lee's remarkable ability to analyze complex issues, challenge assumptions, and offer practical solutions. His approach combines intellectual depth with a heartfelt desire for positive change.  Lee's approachability and empathetic nature create an environment of trust and openness. He listens attentively, respects diverse perspectives, and encourages dialogue that leads to growth and transformation.  If you are seeking a diversity consultant who possesses a rare combination of insight, kindness, and dedication, I wholeheartedly endorse Lee Shull. His expertise, compassion, and commitment to equality will undoubtedly make a significant impact on your organization's journey toward a more diverse and inclusive future.
